7th Grade Counselor
Instructor: Christine R. Cockley

Hello,  My name is Christine Cockley and I am the 7th Grade Counselor here at McCromick Jr. High.  I am  available from 7:30 am - 3:00 pm Monday through Friday.

I am excited for your son/daughter to be part of the McCormick family!!

7th grade is a time of great emotional, physical, and academic change. I can assist with the transition by:  setting up meetings with teachers, monitor grades for recommendation to additional learning opportunities  at McCormick, problem solve academic issues, mediate peer problems, help with social and family concerns, work with students to develop good study habits,  help kids stay organized, and deal with a varity of issues unique to seventh graders.

It is my belief, that if we work as a team, we can make 7th grade a successful and enjoyable experience.

To make life easier, please avail yourselves of these communication tools: Make sure your student has a planner, use teachers websites as tools for success,  attend open house, parent/teacher conferences and Parent Advisory meetings, and email teachers with question and/or concerns before a crisis arises.

If you need assistance, my phone number is 771-2650 extention 32213.  Please leave a message on my voice mail or with my secretary, Tina Hall.  You can also email me at: cockleyc@laramie1.org

Remember... there is no such thing as a stupid question!!!

“Smoking Smarties”

It has come to our attention that a fairly substantial number of students are participating in potentially hazardous fads that are sweeping not only McCormick Jr. High, but the nation as well.  “Smoking  Smarties  (kids crush the candy into a fine powder in its wrapper, draw it into their mouth and then blow it out in a cloud of dust) as reported by Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and YouTube,  gives the appearance of smoking cigarettes.  Seemingly harmless, health experts warn of ever increasing infections, chronic coughs, fatal choking incidents, and maggot infested nasal passages.   For more information see http://online.wsj.com  March 20, 2009 article.

Students (mostly males) are also using choke holds on each other that cause dizziness/light-headedness, and/or losing consciousness. For some, it causes a feeling of euphoria and for others, it can be very frightening when they are caught from behind and then can’t get away.  It is not just playing around, it is considered physical violence.

Last, but not least, are the herbal chew packets infused with nicotine.  The packets are becoming increasingly popular due to the nicotine rush experienced by the user.  They are not a tobacco product, so there is not an age limit on who can purchase them.  If caught with this product at school they may face disciplinary consequences.

Please use this information as teachable moments to remind your son/daughter to practice their refusal skills and not participate in these dangerous behaviors.  Feel free to call your grade level counselor or the school nurse if you need further information or support.
